  • A crowd have unpredictable behaviors. 
  • The classical robot strategy is to detect an obstacle then wait until it disappears. 
  • This approach while simple is very inefficient and can even end up in a lock-up situation.
  • Vita approach which is explicit in this video is to cleverly find a path within unexpected and moving obstacles, here peoples, carefully and politely moving around them.

MALL CASE WITH GUIDANCE AND ASSISTANCE AT DESTINATION (1:52 duration) :

  • The monitor (screen) showing the UI is facing the user only during the request for destination and once arrived. 
  • During its movement the robot does rotate and show this screen to the public, this is intentional as it allows to display message to the crowd. 
  • If needed by Vita at time Vita can turn to face the user to deliver a message.
  • In a more ad-oriented approach, the monitor can be a wide screen (72”) that not only can be used to deliver message asking for example to surrounding people to move, 
  • But can be used to display advertisements, and as the robot know where it is and what it is aiming at, theses advertisement can be chosen according to the places and orientation of the Guide.

USAGE IN HOSPITAL FOR GUIDANCE, FACING UNEXPECTED BUILDING RESTORATION (1:29 duration) :

  • The circumvention of unexpected restoration and construction work, it is clear that Vita-Guide does stop then "standup" in a way where we almost can feel its own surprise.
  • Then it boldly finds a solution. 
  • “Boldly” because the decision was taken to go on a path on the left, while Vita is still not 100% sure that there is a free pathway, but as long as it considers possible to turn around, it “tries”

  • This approach avoids to use lift, lifts typically have a small interior and saving space avoiding to load the robot is a benefit for users
  • It can be noted that this approach solves also issue with escalator, stairs, travelator, or even a taxi to move to another place.
  • Vita-Guide is ahead of user and Vita-Guide does adjust its speed to user speed, staying in charge of always keeping a reasonable distance to user.
  • At very beginning of the video the robot has to improvise a maneuver to avoid the user as well as trying it’s best to arrive on the glass sided pathway.
  • Vita can either ask people to press button for the destination floor or can remotely connected to the Building Management System and drive the elevator.
  • Vita-Guide is perfectly able to enter inside narrow space like a Lift cabin, and Vita-move know also how to get out this narrow cabin where it travels surrounded by peoples and Vita-Move does respect people outside as well as inside.
